Sex and the City

A show from 2000's.

Well, I am not quite sure how many people know this show and how popular it is, but I know one thing for sure, it has a huge influence over whoever watched it. Sex and the City is a show about a friend group consisting of four middle-aged women, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda Hobbs (Cynthia Nixon), Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte York (Kristin Davis), and their carriers, relationships, friendships, and of course sexual lives. The show is the portrayal of their lives.

Carrie Bradshaw, who is the main character of the show, is a columnist in a newspaper, she writes a column called “Sex and the City”. She mentions there, about her friends, and their boyfriends. She touches on issues that everyone is interested so her column is successful and popular. Even, Bradshaw is famous in New York. And her style… She is the icon of the 2000s. Then, there is Miranda Hobbs, a successful lawyer who is trying to be a partner to the company she works for. She stands out as a feminist character - tough, clever, pretty, and ironic. She is kind of like Chandler in this show. And there is Samantha Jones, the ultimate girl boss. She has her own company which is Samantha Jones Public Relations, and she is a fashion icon too. Her approach to relationships challenges traditional power dynamics. I must say, she is the one with the power. Lastly, there's Charlotte York – cute, yet stubborn, determined, and dedicated. Her job at an art gallery is impressive. She knows exactly what she wants, and she always gets it. She works in a gallery and her job is amazing. None of these women are very successful when it comes to relationships (with men obviously) although they are quite charming, successful, and like Charlotte says, “quite a catch”. But is it their fault or are men intimidated by strong women?

They always gather for brunch on Saturdays, and it caught my attention how wonderful is to have these adult friendships, being with friends who know what they want in their life and in their closet too. Whenever I watch this show, it fascinates me how they have “that” life, I mean they have great friendships and financial stability. Their relations, every kind, are so mature and real. Unlike the media which always thought women to be young otherwise they are useless and ugly, I find 30-something years very attractive as a woman myself. Having enough money and liberty means we are unstoppable and uncontrollable. That’s probably why patriarchal society always forces us to be young and marry young so that we can be controllable. "Sex and the City" has taught me that getting older is not something to fear. I couldn’t help but wonder, one day will I be one of those women in the Sex and the City?

Finally, I highly recommend you to watch this show and have a different perspective on middle-aged women.
