The Trust In Sunscreen

Let's put on SPF 50+, and talk about our trust in sunscreen

As the interest in skin care has increased a lot in recent years, we have seen sunscreen become more commonly used. We have witnessed different brands beginning to sell sunscreen. We have witnessed different types of sunscreen: mineral filters, tinted sunscreen, sunscreen for all type of skin types, etc. We have begun to put an extravagant trust in sunscreen. So, let's put on some SPF and talk about SPF.

When the weather gets sunnier than usual, we all start to talk about sunscreen, sunglasses, and bronzers. This trio has been in our summers for a very long time. But, especially this summer, something has changed. As the brands are used to our overconsumption habits, they took advantage. We have seen different types of advertising for sunscreen this year.

For example, I saw an influencer putting sunscreen on their hair for advertising. I saw people buy blushes, which consist of sunscreen. I witnessed many sunscreen advertisements and many absurd ways of using them. I even saw an influencer who uses 2 different types of sunscreen. One for her cheeks, the other for her forehead.

As these examples increased, many people began to lose trust in sunscreen. I read many comments and entries saying that they think sunscreen is beneficial for the capitalist order. People began to question why they had to put a teaspoon of sunscreen on their faces. And they began to question the past. I saw many people saying that their big grandmothers did not use SPF and they did not suffer. And, also, some people began to question the harm caused by sunscreen.

To be honest with you, there is a big dilemma here. We suffer from UV lights because of increasing global warming. But we continue to harm the environment with the use of SPF. According to the National Ocean Service, chemicals in some types of sunscreen can affect marine life. The process is like this: you put on sunscreen, you go swimming, and the sunscreen can wash off, and the chemicals in it can interact with some sea creatures. This leads us to read and be aware of some ingredients. We should always check the brand we are supporting. And now, we should know a few ingredients that can be harmful for the ocean and the sea.

What are we going to do, though? Many people now say that we should use sunscreen during the winter too. Some say that we should also stop using sunscreen for a while so that our skin can get some beneficial vitamins. Honestly, I believe that the UV lights are more dangerous than ever. Skin cancer has been more prevalant because of the dangers in UV lights. This is something that we should not risk.

But I do believe that blushes, sunscreen for hair, or using many types of sunscreen at once are not something required. Just because we want to stay healthy, we should not feed our overconsumption habits again.

Yes, we should all use types of sunscreen for our health. That is why, let's just buy a sunscreen for our body and face, and use it! And, before buying it, analyze the ingredients. And, check whether they are safe or not! Do not believe that sunscreen is overrated because of its extreme use.

Let's trust sunscreen, but let's think before trusting all brands.
