You may have seen it on the wrists of Kanye West, Tyler the Creator, or even Jay Z. Today, I'm going to talk about how the Cartier Crash, the most unorthodox watch in the luxury watch industry, came to be and how it's breaking a lot of the myths in the watch industry.

Although there are many scenarios in which it was inspired by Salvador Dali's famous painting “THE PERSISTENCE OF MEMORY” the story of the watch's origin begins in 1967 when a customer brought his Baignoire model watch (one of Cartier's watch models) to his boutique in London after it was damaged in a car accident.

According to legend, the deformed Baignoire inspired jeweler Jean-Jacques Cartier to design the watch's first asymmetrical case, symbolizing conformism and creative freedom. This explains why Crash was considered avant-garde and unconventional by some in the first months of its launch. It is undoubtedly this urge to challenge and break with convention that contributed most to the watch's success.

The Cartier Crash has attracted collectors as diverse as movie legend Stewart Granger and hip-hop star Kanye West. Although the design first appeared in the 1960s, its form and design were quite different from all other watch designs of the decade. This is what made it stand out and become so iconic. In particular, it had none of the typical stylistic characteristics of the years in which it came out, and we could even go further and say that it did not fully embody the stylistic design characteristics of any era.
