Means to attain a happy life by Henry Howard
”The Means to Attain a Happy Life” is a poem that bears its main point within the title. It was translated by Henry Howard from an ancient Spanish poem Martial’s Epigrams. Henry formed this poem which suggests the ways to reach a nice life, with dignity and satisfaction. And, at the beginning of this poem, Henry addresses it back to this poem’s original owner.
In order to pursue a happy life, he begins with saying that one should gain wealth without any sufferance behind it, furthermore having a worthy home and a calm, collected mind is quite important. The other thing one need is a peer friend who does not bring any conflict along with them.
With everything, they say: ”Health comes first.” and this was the same with Martial too. A long life, free from any disease is on the list. For that of course you need a healthy diet, a proper family, simplicity in your wisdom and drinking your wine in a moderate amount. Lastly,he mentions that one should have a loyal spouse, being able to put your head on your pillow peacefully at night, feeling pleased on your own grounds and in the end not being scared of death nor desiring it.
Although, this poem in fact was written 1500 years ago, these means in order are what people need to have in the interests of a happy life. This conveys that, in whatever timeline you live in there will be some eternal aspects you need to keep in mind for a content entity.
Hence, it would be assumed he had applied all of this into his life. However, this was not the case. He was in the position of a nobleman during the reign of Henry the VIII-who is infamous with his brutal executions-but over and above that he also took place in many battles, being in the soldier force, pursuing a chaotic life.
