If Virginia Woolf Could Hear Iranian Women

Feminist rebellion in the Middle East

The legacy of Virginia Woolf, who, as a female writer, tried to transform her world with her pen, meets the silent screams of women living in the Middle East today. The headscarf issue, especially in Iran, has become more than just a piece of fabric, it has become a symbol of the injustice against women's freedom. However, the insensitive reception of these injustices by the Western world appears as one of the obstacles to a universal feminist rebellion.

The internal monologues of the characters in Virginia Woolf's works, women questioning their own existence and fighting for their freedom, help us understand the resistance of women living in Iran today against the headscarf obligation. However, most of the Western world, right next to this resistance, prefers to remain silent. Perhaps this silence is a reflection of insensitivity to women's rights violations and a lack of universal solidarity. The headscarf resistance of women in Iran is not just a matter of geography, but a universal human rights issue. The feminist call was that women should write their own stories and fight for their freedom. However, the majority of the Western world acts deaf to the cries of these women. At a time when the West is identified with feminism, ignoring the injustices experienced by women in the Middle East seems to betray a universal principle of solidarity.

Understanding that feminist rebellion is a universal language is important to create a common consciousness not only against our own problems but also against the injustices suffered by women all over the world. Woolf's feminist perspective calls for a wake-up call against the injustices experienced not only in her own society but throughout the world. Today, the headscarf resistance of women in Iran expects the Western world to actively listen to these screams to ensure universal solidarity and justice. It should not be forgotten that Woolf's call was not only to hear the silent screams but also to act together against these screams.
