Is Sexual Education Necessary?

One of the taboos of society is a real issue for the future generations.

Some people think sexual education is immoral and should not be talked about in public, it must be private. On the other hand, other people reach a point where a lack of sexual education can result in suppressed sexuality and misleading. In my opinion, this conflict is a major problem to be solved. Furthermore, sexuality must be addressed because it is one of the realities of life and youth acquire healthy information from school instead of social media or people with a limited understanding of the sexology and psychology of youth.

There are some reasons why people, particularly religious people, have some biases toward sex education. One of the reasons is the perspective of religions. Religions like Islam, Christianity, and Judaism generally take a conservative stance on sexuality. They generally prohibit sexual activity outside of marriage. That’s why religious people are opposed to anything about sexuality, even though it is an education. I mean, conservative people believe that talking, discussing, and learning about sexuality will make it more common and lead to its normalization.

Additionally, morality conflicts are another reason. Parents raise their children by imposing taboos on sexuality so that they create a generation suppressing their emotions. They do so because they think sexuality is immoral. This type of perception causes misinformation and deception. For instance, many children believe that pregnancy is provided by kissing, and young girls have some anxieties due to prevalent lies about first sexual activity. Briefly, religions and ethical values generally result in deception.

In addition to these problems, of course, there are some solutions. To begin with religions’ influence on society, people should adopt a secular approach to science and education. Sensitive topics can be taught at the school because society and children need them. The curriculum of education must be based on rationalism instead of morality. Morality is subjective and varies between individuals; yet, rationalism is linked with science and logic. Ethical understanding can fluctuate from person to person and this results in furious arguments. Education and curriculum should focus on science and rationalism, rather than being shaped by subjective ethical values.

Secondly, morality should focus on preventing harm to others, rather than being a symbol of a conservative lifestyle. Moreover, families should be accustomed to normalizing sex education. Seminars, conferences, and public awareness campaigns can be established. Psychologists, sociologists, and doctors must bear responsibility because an uninformed generation is emerging. People must accept that sexuality is a natural part of life, and if we have not normalized this, the consequences will be terrible. In short, adults need to confront the reality of sex.

To conclude, the deficiency of sex education causes so many sociological issues. If adults can get rid of their prejudices, more educated generations will be raised. People need to find some solutions because young people are seriously influenced by gossip and so many fake pieces of information.
