Morbius: A Step In The Wrong Direction
An opinion piece on the latest Sony/MCU comic book movie, Morbius. Contains spoilers.
Morbius is the latest Sony comic book installment in association with MARVEL studios, Starring Jared Leto.
The movie stars comic book character Dr. Michael Morbius, who happens to be a gifted doctor and Nobel prize nominee. Having struggled with a blood disease since childhood, it is revealed that he has been secretly working on an experiment to heal himself by mixing human DNA with that of bat DNA, the experiment succeeds and saves his life, however, he did not foresee the side effects, which include super strength, echolocation, flight, and many more, however, he has to consume human blood in order to survive.
The movie starts off slow, it introduces the protagonist in ways of his work life, his friendships, and his background, it is only during the second half of the movie, after Dr. Morbius's Transition, that the movie picks up a bit in terms of action and intrigue.
During this time, we see the lead discover his abilities and deal with the mess he left behind while transitioning, moreover, he is set up against an antagonist with the same powers and abilities as his own, which is a very popular choice in comic book movies, he then wins the fight and the movie is over.
The movie can be seen as disappointing to those who have been following the progression of the MCU for years, for it lacked any of the effort shown in countless other MCU/Sony projects. In fact, the only saving grace the movie has is the mid-credit and post-credit scenes, where we find out that The Vulture, who was the villain in Spider-Man: Homecoming has somehow made his way from his own universe to this new one and wishes to team up with Morbius in order to take down the Spider-Man of that universe.
Overall, the movie was an underwhelming experience, that left little to be remarked on or remembered. Perhaps, future installations to the franchise would do justice to the character and come out with a better storyline.
