Real Historical Figures Who Inspired the Game of Characters

Good luck with Game of Thrones!

Hello, dear readers. Today we will be exploring the characters of the Game of Thrones universe but with a twist. These characters are not ordinary people; real historical figures inspire them. We won't encounter mystical creatures or magical beings, but rather important figures who serve as guides for the characters. In various resources about George R. R. Martin, he has mentioned the similarities between his book and the real world. He drew inspiration from a number of historical events, with the War of Roses being one example. However, for the purpose of this discussion, we will be focusing on the characters. So, please welcome the first character is...

Robert Baratheon. Robert and Henry VIII share a striking resemblance to each other, not only in terms of their physical appearance but also in their affinity for women. Henry's relationship with Anne Boleyn and Robert's relationships with unmarried women create significant similarities between the two. They also share a love for hunting, which was an indispensable activity in Henry's life and an important aspect of Robert's life because his life ended with a boar attack.

Another character worth discussing is Tyrion Lannister, who resembles Emperor Claudius in certain ways. The two share a number of similar characteristics, including being looked down upon by their families due to their imperfections. Claudius is physically disabled, and Tyrion's family judged him for his size and choices. However, both of them prove their power and worth by the end of their stories.

Another important character to mention is Jamie Lannister. Jamie and Cesare Borgia share similarities as victorious warriors who have problems in their personal relationships. Cesare is known for betraying his own brother, while Jamie is infamous for earning the title of "Kingslayer." Furthermore, both characters have complicated relationships with their siblings, with Jamie having a relationship with his sister, Cersei Lannister.

Next, one of my favorite characters is Cersei Lannister. Like Cersei, Catherine de Medici was born into a wealthy family, and both strong women are fiercely protective of their families. They also share similarities in how they learn of their children's destinies, consulting magicians and witches. Despite their parallels, Cersei and Catherine de Medici are compelling characters.

One of the most hated characters in the Game of Thrones universe is Joffrey Baratheon, and in real life, there was a similarly vicious figure: Roman Emperor Caligula. Both were young when they ascended to power and enjoyed the feelings of victory and control. Ultimately, their stories share the same fate, as they were both killed due to widespread hatred towards them.

Another one of my favorite characters is Robb Stark. Robb and Edward IV of York share similarities in their rise to power, as Edward became King after his father's execution, just as Robb became King after the death of his father, Ned Stark. Additionally, both chose love over duty, with Edward marrying Elizabeth Woodville and Robb marrying his lover, which ultimately led to the tragic events of the Red Wedding.

Elizabeth of York is most commonly known as the mother of Henry VIII, but before that, she herself had dreams of becoming a queen, much like Sansa Stark. The two women share physical similarities, including tall and skinny bodies as well as golden-red hair. Over time, the fairy tale was overtaken by politics, and Sansa and Elizabeth's desire to become queen changed a bit.

Margaery Tyrell is another powerful character in the Game of Thrones universe, and she shares similarities with Anne Boleyn, who was the second wife of Henry VIII. Anne and Henry's relationship was a notable event in history. Similarly, although Margaery did not marry Robert, she married Robert's son, Joffrey, who was once betrothed to Sansa Stark.

One of the most important characters is undoubtedly Daenerys Targaryen. She shares some similarities with Queen Elizabeth, who is also known as the Virgin Queen for rejecting male dominance. Daenerys had a relationship with Khal Drogo to make her purpose a reality. From beginning to end, she tried to claim her place on the Iron Throne by herself. Both amazing women had lovers, but they were never willing to be dominated by men.

Joan of Arc, a famous female warrior in history, has probably inspired many fictional female heroes. Joan and Brienne of Tarth, however, have more in common than superficial similarities. Brienne was required to prove herself to Prince Renly, while Joan of Arc had to convince Charles VII. They also dress in a similar style, mostly masculine and comfortable. Brienne did not share the same fate as Joan of Arc, who was burned at the stake in 1431. I talked about her story in my previous blog posts. If you want to read more, you can find them on my profile.

I was only able to talk about a few characters in my writing, but I can say that there are many more similar characters and events. Game of Thrones is truly an incredible universe. Each character has its own unique features; I could write hundreds of pages to talk about them. If you have read my writing without watching it, your mind may be confused, so I invite you to watch it right away or even read the books. Take care of yourself. Good luck with Game of Thrones!
