This book is the story of a black African American woman. In the novel, Walker reflects Celie's life story and her inner journey in an impressive way.

Celie has experienced too many difficulties throughout her life. Celie has been subjected to rape, bullying and violence since the age of 14. In the novel, Celie does not tell anyone about anything what she was living. She only writes letters to God.

In the novel, Celie is always questioning why the things that happened to her happened to her. Celie is on a journey to find her own identity, her own self. 

The novel proceeds through letters. Celie writes letters to God. She tries to hide her struggles from everyone. In the novel, the only person Celie feels the real bond of love is her sister Nettie. She has a beautiful sisterly relationship with Nettie, but she struggles hard not to be separated from her. In the novel, Celie's life begins to change when Sofia enters her life. She finds her own self. She becomes aware of her own power.


"I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and do not notice it." (Walker,98)

She said that because For Celie, the purple color represents freedom and uses it a lot in the novel.


In this novel, Alice Walker examines gender roles and gender conflicts. In the novel, she reveals racism, bullying and discrimination experienced by black women. The novel consists of themes of love, identity, struggle and hope. The book The Purple of Colors shows the problems of the period, the resistance and struggle of women, especially black women.
