The Dark Side Of Hustle Culture

On the outside, Hustle Culture seems to promote hard work and success, but what goes behind that may not seem as healthy as one might think.

To start off, let me briefly explain what Hustle Culture is. Hustle Culture is a widely spread mindset that encourages hard work, in the pursuit of glory. It promotes revolving one's entire life around work.

One of the most intense impacts of the media on our generation has to be the rise of hustle culture, whereas people are relentlessly encouraged to pursue side businesses and work their fingers to the bone so that they may become financially independent and free themselves of the shackles of 9-5 workdays and having to answer to a boss. As idealistic as this may seem, the pressure it puts on young people to work and hustle and make money is doing more damage than good.

While being your own boss and owning a business may seem like a dream come true for many people, the belief that any and all business ideas are equally good and profitable is delusional; making money by doing something one loves is advantageous, however, the downside of it is that one might lose the love they have for it down the line if they keep adding stress and deadlines to something they love.

Even though the 9-5 work-life is looked down upon, and is seen as sad and robotic, many people thrive on that routine, it gives them a steady income while allowing them time to pursue their hobbies and interests without the added stress that might ultimately strip the activity of any joy it may have once brought.

Hustle culture equates one's worth with their work, it promotes pooling all of one's resources to focus on work and having all the other aspects of one's life come in second. Albeit, Work is a crucial part of life, and that's exactly what it should be, a part of life, working hard and having a passion for what one does should not get in the way of all the other parts of life that make it worthwhile. Finding a balance that works for each individual is a healthier and more sustainable option than burning out in pursuit of temporary blazing glory.
