The Similarity Between the Cycle in Nature and Literature
A nation devoid of art and artists cannot have a full existence.
Life cycles happen in nature and these cycles occur regularly and constantly for living to stay alive. Cycles like the water cycle and nitrogen cycle happen in nature as a result of getting affected by the conditions that are around them and they occur as long as the conditions are supplied. Natural events and the balance of nature are maintained thanks to the conditions that happen. Natural events come into reality as a result of bad or good conditions in nature itself. If air can’t reach a specific heat then water won’t be able to evaporate or when there is no regular rain but water scarcities, then as a result of these, drought happens. Then, as another result, the livings on the world would come to an end. Natural events show their state to warn people if something is wrong and abnormal so that people may try to find the reasons and solve the problems. In some ways nature reflects the conditions around it and their state, balance, and results, just like authors getting affected by the conditions happening around them and writing down literary works to reflect the period and society to raise awareness, help people to be aware of what is happening, warn them and show them the real intention of those actions.
Each work that is written has characteristics of the era it is written in, such as cultural elements, customs, traditions even positive or negative performances that occurred during the period included works thus writers’ works become a guiding light for future readers and also a society of the period as we understand the features of a specific area by analyzing its weather to decide on its types of plants, if that land is fertile enough to settle down.
As an example, all works written in the genre of comedy of manners deal with and show the mannerisms of aristocracy, to make fun of the high class’s actions and corruption of the society because while writing or before writing them the authors witness such performances and corruptions in the society which ended up with such works being produced. For example, the characters in John Webster’s The White Devil always pursue different ways to deceive each other such as murder, and cheating. They all try to take advantage of one another and each other’s power, to empower themselves moreover none of the characters show merciful or virtuous actions.
Another example is Christopher Marlowe’s The Massacre at Paris. In his book Marlowe wrote a play of disagreements between protestants and Catholics, Catholics’ conspire against Protestants to murder them and even catch them unaware. Guise takes advantage of the power he has to murder protestants just because they do not have the same belief as him. It also shows the fact that society does not have any respect for each other, they all are obsessed with money so the society Marlowe lived in was a corrupted one as well. In addition, we can associate corrupted societies with droughts because both come into reality when dissatisfactions and negative phenomena happen.
Like all these, all works are reflections of their society and period just like the weather that reflects the conditions happening in the air covering up a land, how things are in the air and around it. Just as rain falls when certain conditions are met around the clouds, when certain words and situations are provided in writers’ minds, their words come down to the earth concretely.
