The Story of La Llorna
La Llorona is Hispano-American folklore that tells the tale of a woman who killed her children.
Translated as the ''Weeping Woman'', La Llorona is an urban legend that has its roots in Latin American regions. Since it is an urban legend, it has several versions. In the most popular version of the urban legend, a woman called Maria drowns her two children in a river when she sees her husband with another woman in order to make her husband pay for his action. Maria immediately regrets killing her children and drowns herself as well. Since she murdered her children, she cannot follow her children in the afterlife and she is now stuck in purgatory, existing as a vengeful spirit. Parents who don't want their kids to wander around scare them with this story, saying that the weeping woman will take children who wander around without having parents by their sides. In another version, Maria's husband marries another woman and Maria drowns her children rather than letting them be raised by another woman. Despite some differences, the ghost of Maria is described as a woman who cries all the time while wearing a light blue or white dress. Various songs that depict this story don't give vibes of motherly love. Almost all versions of the story that has been adapted to a song are like a confession of unrequited love.
