What is the Importance of a Healthy Debate?
How to have a healthy argument?
A healthy discussion is a form of communication in which people share different views, try to understand each other, and find common solutions. It requires people to treat each other with respect, tolerance, and empathy. It enables people to be open to criticism and to improve themselves.
Using "I" language instead of "you" language means a healthier, more understanding, and constructive approach to communication. "You" language is using a language that accuses, criticizes, or judges the other party. This can lead to conflict, defense, or breakdown in communication. For example, expressions such as "You don't know anything" or "You are always like this" fall under the "you" language. "I" language is using a language that clearly expresses one's own feelings, thoughts, and needs. This creates meaning, closeness, and resolution in communication. For example, "I am very upset about this" or "I want to spend more time with you" are examples of "I" language. We can take the following steps to use "I" language instead of "you" language:
- Avoid blaming, criticizing, or judging the other person.
- Express your own feelings and needs in sentences beginning with "I".
- Respect the other person's feelings and point of view.
- Try to empathize in communication.
- Approach problems in a solution-oriented way.
It is important to identify the purpose of the person we are discussing with. It is crucial to be able to understand whether the other person is defending their opinion in a bigoted way or whether they really want to learn new things and add new things to their own ideas. Some people prefer to fight and come to an agreement or find a solution to this. Although arguing is a natural occurrence in every human relationship, there may be some people who do not prefer anger management or healthy communication. You should stay as far away from such people as possible and not wear yourself out. Being with people of high quality and high prestige who can understand you, will make you stronger.
