As winter and autumn arrive, soup is perhaps one of the indispensable products on the table. There are cold soups for hot days to cool off a little. When we look at Turkish food culture, we see many varieties of soup, and it is an important part of other cultures as well. So what is known about soup, and why do we love it?
Archaeological discoveries of boiling pits and animal bones with signs of marrow extraction provide evidence of early soup-making dating to approximately 20,000 BCE. The basis for what would eventually become a common culinary staple was established by this technique.
Soup evolved from a home-cooked meal to a convenient mass-produced item during the Industrial Revolution. The development of canning technology in the 19th century made it possible for businesses like Campbell's and Heinz to create condensed soups, which quickly became global pantry staples. Instant soups like bouillon cubes and, later, instant noodles also gained popularity during this time.
But why do we love soup so much? The charm of soup is its versatility. It can be used as a comforting cure for illness, as a meal in and of itself, or as an appetizer to stimulate appetite. Soup has a way of uniting people, whether it's through the adventurous flavors of an exotic creation or the nostalgic taste of a family recipe. For some, coming home after a tiring and exhausting day, preparing soup, and eating it is a comforting and heartwarming activity.
