WormGPT: The Dark Side of Generative AI

Unleashing WormGPT: The Dark Side of Generative AI in Cybercrime and Phishing

Given how popular generative artificial intelligence (AI) is right now, it may not come as a surprise that the technology has been repurposed by bad actors for their gain, opening up new opportunities for faster crimes.

A new generative AI cybercrime tool dubbed WormGPT has been offered on darknet forums as a mechanism for adversaries to carry out complex phishing and corporate email compromise (BEC) assaults, according to SlashNext findings.

Researchers from the cybersecurity company SlashNext discovered the WormGPT program, which was advertised for sale on a hacker site, according to a blog post they published.

The forum poster claimed that the WormGPT project seeks to be an "alternative" to ChatGPT for blackhat users, "one that lets you do all sorts of illegal stuff and easily sell it online in the future."

With the aid of WormGPT, the researchers were able to "generate an email designed to coerce an unwary account manager into paying a fraudulent invoice." The group was taken aback by how the language model handled the challenge adeptly, describing the outcome as "remarkably compelling and also tactically clever."

According to its description, WormGTP is "similar to ChatGPT but has no ethical boundaries or limitations."

To prevent users from misusing the chatbot unethically, ChatGPT has put in place a set of regulations. This includes declining to do actions connected to crime and malware. Users, however, are continuously coming up with workarounds for these restrictions.

OpenAI, a reputable and reputable company, created ChatGPT. They did not create WormGMT, illustrating how hackers can draw ideas from cutting-edge AI chatbots to create dangerous tools.

Tools like WormGPT could be a potent weapon in the hands of a bad actor, especially because organizations like Google Bard and OpenAI ChatGPT are working harder to prevent the misuse of large language models (LLMs) to create convincing phishing emails and produce harmful code. WormGPT may be the mastermind behind sophisticated assaults that seriously harm networks and computer systems.

WormGPT is a chatbot created maliciously and used only to support illegal online activity. WormGPT should not be used as it violates laws about hacking, data theft, and other illegal activities. We must use technology ethically and responsibly, ensuring that nothing we do causes harm to other people. We may contribute to creating a better and more secure digital world by comprehending the dangers of WormGPT and similar programs.
