A Workplace Thriller: Severance

A corporation whose employees' non-work memories are separated from their work memories.

Apple TV’s science-fiction psychological thriller series “Severance” is undoubtedly among the most recommended TV series of 2022 with its brilliant script. It is directed by Ben Stiller and Aoife McArdle and stars great actors such as Adam Scott, Britt Lower, John Turturro, Zach Cherry, and Christopher Walken. It centers on four workers at the Macrodata Refinement department of a corporate named Lumon Industries. The employees of Lumon Industries undergo a process of ‘severance’ which separates their work memories from their personal memories.

The separation or ‘severance’ activates during an employee takes the elevator to go down the Macrodata Refinement department. When they hop in the elevator at Lumon Industries, employees do not remember their non-work memories, and thus they have nothing but work during their working hours.

Mark Scout, a worker at the MDR department of Lumon Industries, signs up for the severance procedure as he is grieving the loss of his wife on the outside. He wants to move away from his grief at least for a part of the day.

Mark is appointed as the head of the MDR department at Lumon after he is informed of the abrupt resignation of his colleague and best friend at the office, Petey. With the mysterious and sudden departure of Petey, Mark and his colleagues Dylan, Helly, and Irving suspect that something sinister might be going on at Lumon Industries and try to find out the truth, communicating with their personal selves i.e., their ‘outies’.

Along with its brilliant plot, Severance is a must-watch due to its cinematography and music as well. Tension builds up throughout the nine episodes, and the cliffhanger ending of the first season makes the next season definitely something to look forward to!
