Addiction Of Our Age: Multitasking

The myth of "multitasking"

When was the last time you watched a movie without checking your phone? Can you eat without watching something on YouTube?

With the extreme amount of media exposure, media devices and their platforms have become like an arm for us. It is nearly impossible to stop scrolling or checking your phone once in a while.

With this decreased attention span, a term has come into our lives: multitasking. And, let's be honest here, this is not something that we should be proud of.

I am a digital native: I have been familiar with technology my whole life. I know how to use each platform. This much experience gave me an addiction of multitasking. When I was in high school, I thought this was a gift. Being able to focus on more than 2 things was great! I could read and listen to music at the same time. I could study and watch a sitcom show. Well, that did not age well.

The more I grew up, the more my responsibilities increased. I was able to watch a show and study, but now I am neither able to watch a show nor study without breaks. Of course, we all need breaks, but giving a break in 5 minutes is not needed at all.

This multitasking habit is irritating and exhausting. Sometimes, I go full mad and try to write 2 different essays in the same time. Right now, I need to put a classical music video on YouTube to read, so that I do not take my phone in a few minutes. When I study, I get overwhelmed easily because some days I need music like breathing, and other days I need a full silent session. Watching a movie is fun, but trying to finish it without using my phone or tablet has become impossible.

Well, the funny thing is that multitasking is actually a myth. The addiction I am suffering from only hurts my head, because it should. Our brains are not supposed to deal with multiple tasks at once.

Actually, our productivity level decreases during multiple tasks. When we focus on one job, we will do our best in that job. And we will keep doing this with new tasks.

Even though multitasking is a skill that is required by some companies and is on the skills list on everyone's CV, we should be careful with what we are doing.

This multitasking thing is not good for your health. You tire your brain more than you should, and then you keep doing that for other tasks! You need to put an end to this cycle. Because, in the end, you will have multiple tasks done poorly.

It is better if we focus on one thing at a time. When you go on a walk, focus on the way you walk! When you watch a movie, focus on the plot and characters. And how well the setting is set. When you go to a concert, just enjoy the music instead of trying to record it!

These will all take time, and it will be challengeing. But, we should do what is best for our mental and physical health. Let's try to focus on one task now.

Thank you for reading! I hope to talk to you again. Bye!
