Artificial Intelligence: Is it a new threat to us?

In this blog, I am handling the artificial intelligence subject.

Artificial intelligence, which refers to the development of computer systems able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages, is a matter which arose with the 2nd World War. But, this phenomenon today leads to the creation of conspiracy theories, one of which is that the intelligence of machines will eradicate humanity one day. On the other hand, the use of artificial intelligence provides lots of benefits for us even now, although it has not been so advanced that machines are not independent of humans yet. Even though there are both pros and cons of artificial intelligence, I believe that we should not allow artificial intelligence and machines to take over total control.

Completely depending on machines in the work area gives rise to a high unemployment rate due to the fact that corporations will not need humans. Instead of hiring workers, companies will invest in machines; consequently, the economy will be affected severely, and incomes won’t be dispersed equally. In other words, if we get our work done by machines totally, our economic situation will be aggravated much more, and the rich will get richer, whereas the poor will become more deprived.

The overall cost of implementing an AI machine is enormous. Besides the cost of purchase, machines require regular maintenance, which also raises the total cost. Even though substituting employees with artificial intelligence seems more profitable, companies spend more money for both purchasing proper devices and maintaining them. Also, in case of machines are broken, the production chain is halted; as a result, companies lose plenty of money during pause sessions.

For those who think that the world will be a better place with the inventions in artificial intelligence, machines will take risks in situations where the safety of a human is unsure; thus, job security will increase thanks to machines. However, if machines are put to work instead of humans, there is no need for employees. Hence, the job security notion for humans will be trivial and meaningless because individuals are not employed and hired.

In conclusion, although it is true that artificial intelligence gives us a lot of advantages to us, there also exist disadvantages if we let machines do all the work. It seems to me that we can benefit from machines and let them help us; yet, we should not submit to them completely.
