Books vs Movies

In this blog, I am comparing books with movies.

What do you prefer to do in your free time? Nowadays, most people usually spend their time on social media. On the other hand, a minor group either read a book in their spare time, unlike the majority. But, there is a conflict about which one is better in free time. In fact, there are many similarities between books and movies such as both books and movies tell us a story that is fiction and consist of characters; however, there are also some differences, which spark these discussions.

One point of parallel between books and movies is the ability to teach. A person can learn a lot thanks to books. Through a book, it is possible to experience life in the Cold War or being a woman in an Islamic country. Just like books, movies give loads of opportunities to their audiences to learn about different things. With the neutral perspective of the director, it enables audiences to watch every subject, such as the Revolution in Iran and being alone on Mars.

Another similarity is their reward and evaluation aspect. Both books and movies are actually sold, and the best ones are awarded. People can evaluate both of two on the internet like any other product. IMDB and Goodreads came into being to ease this evaluation system. A person can freely interpret and give ratings on both of these sites.

Besides these similarities, there are also some differences between books and movies. One evident difference is time. Harry Potter and Lord Of The Rings, for instance, is a book series and after their great success all around the world, they were adapted to the movies. Out of fan discussion, which is about differences between books and their adaptation, it is feasible that a person watches a movie by spending 2 hours instead of reading a 500-page book, which takes days.

The last but not least difference is imagination. In the books, a writer can compose a world that is also created in readers' minds. Some writers don't describe the characters much; some of them even leave the end of the story to readers. On the other hand, movies differ from movies in that directors need to show us plenty of things related to the story. To illustrate, Hermonie Granger, who is a character in the Harry Potter series, is completely created in some readers' minds. For example, Hermonie Granger has been featured by a black woman recently and maybe she will be featured by a woman with a headscarf in the future. It is because books leave the type or physical appearance of a character in readers’ minds that watching different Hermonies is possible; in contrast, in Harry Potter's movies, Emma Watson features Hermonie Granger, and there is a certainty about Hermonie Granger's physical appearance. In other words, we watch a cast director’s choice in the movies instead of our imagination.

In conclusion, whereas there are some differences, there are also some important parallelisms between books and movies. Therefore, it would be wrong to conclude that these are fully dissimilar from each other. In other words, books and movies are separated in some ways both of two are good options for spare time.
