England After the Norman Conquest
List of some historical facts in the Middle Ages.
A very short list of some historical facts about the Middle Ages, some political.
1) The Battle of Hastings, which took place in 1066, saw William the Conqueror invade England and become the first Norman king.
2) Cultural change: This brought a shift in culture with itself, like French culture. The people brought their own culture and language to the island and also adapted to this new mode.
3) Latin, French, and English: There were three main languages in this period. The common people spoke English, the members of the court spoke French, and the church spoke Latin.
4) Feudalism and church: There was a strict distinction between the lords and vassals. Lords are the rulers, and vassals are the people subject to the rule. It means the man who fights for a lord or a king. There was knighthood in this period. It was a common practice. The church was powerful, and that is why monasteries were the center of education. Education was limited to the church.
6) Wars and plagues: There are many wars in this period: the Hundred Years' War, the War of the Roses, and the Black Death plague. They all affected the cultural and social structure of the island.
