Just a Small Town Girl Solving a Mysterious Crime

A nostalgic dive into the crime-solving adventures of a witty teen detective.

As someone who misses the old TV series with no excessive strong language, love scenes or ridiculous drama – where every TV show was way more pleasing even though they had sexist jokes and statements – I feel nothing but joy in suggesting a TV series called Veronica Mars.

Veronica Mars, a series created by Rob Thomas, is set in Neptune, in 2004. In this small town, things changed, especially for Veronica (Kristen Bell), after the murder of a high school student, Lilly Kane, who was Veronica’s best friend. Veronica’s father, former Sheriff Keith Mars, blamed and investigated Lilly’s father and received many complaints from the people in Neptune. Therefore, he was voted out of his job and became a private detective. Don Lamb took his place as the new sheriff, and believe me when I say this: he is no lamb at all.

A suspect was arrested for Lilly Kane’s murder but the Mars family was not happy with this verdict. Because Keith Mars had blamed Lilly’s father, Veronica’s boyfriend, and Lilly’s brother, Duncan Kane, broke up with Veronica. After this, Veronica was kicked out of her popular friend group. The happiest person about this decision was Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring), who is Lilly’s boyfriend – well, sort of an ex-boyfriend since she’s dead.

Veronica starts working as an assistant to her father at the agency. She balances high school life while trying to solve Lilly Kane’s murder and, in doing so, helps the students at Neptune High with their small crime cases, saving money. Her wit and humor can do nothing less, trust me.

This series immediately sent me back to the early 2000s and made me reminisce about the old TV series where we never questioned the actors' plotlines or acting skills. Of course, some things gave me the ick or seemed very funny to be real, but I still loved watching it in this decade of “Let’s make every TV show and movie the same!”

Apart from its story, what I loved most about this show is that it has a trope of ‘enemies to lovers’. If you love watching two characters flirting with hatred and waiting impatiently for them to snog, plus a mysterious crime and some old-school jokes, you definitely should watch it, if you haven’t already. Thank me later.
