Master of Horror Literature: H. P. Lovecraft
He is a great writer that comes to mind when we think about horror books.
H. P. Lovecraft is undoubtedly one of the writers who have an important place in horror literature. Lovecraft is a huge master who shaped horror literature almost half a century ago, seen as one of the fathers of strange fiction. However, the American writer, like many of his colleagues, could not see while experiencing the respect he deserved.
H. P. Lovecraft was born on August 20, 1890. And he would remain active as a writer for 11 years until his death from intestinal cancer at the age of 46. Strange events, as he himself stated in many places, have always been of interesting by Lovecraft. The ghost and witch stories narrated when he was little, have influenced him very deeply. He even started memorizing poetry when he was two years old, and besides, he learned how to read at the age of 4.
Both Lovecraft's mother and father had neural diseases. His father had a crisis when Lovecraft was just three years old and he lived in Buttler Mental Hospital - for five years - until he died. His father's illness and death affected Lovecraft a lot. Later, he lived with his mother, aunt and grandmother. But his mother with the same problems was also taken to the same hospital when Lovecraft was 29 years old and died there two years later.
Lovecraft suffered from many psychological illnesses in his childhood and did not like school. Lovecraft, who wanted to be an astronomer in high school years, had never finished high school due to many psychological ailments, but the curiosity of astronomy had never stopped. He used to go out at night and study astronomy on his own. He didn't go out too much during the day, he preferred to sleep. In the evening he could not sleep because of nightmares, he wrote or spent time outside.
The biggest of his entertainments, since childhood was to read, and for an introverted person, there was not much to do except to study astronomy. He read a lot and made up stories by himself. Lovecraft, clearly inspired by Edgar Alan Poe, wrote many stories. These stories were published in the magazine “Weird Tales”, but his original works that made him famous were published after his death.
Many writers and illustrators have also been influenced by the magnificent stories of Lovecraft. Other than that, there are companies selling Lovecraft toys, trinkets, rings, sculptors making sculptures on the Cthulhu myth.
As a result, Lovecraft is a great writer.
The stories he wrote have influenced many authors like Stephen King.
Maybe the presence of Cthlhu, Nyarlatoteph, Necronomicon can be discussed. But there is no debate on how Lovecraft is a great writer.
