Poetry and Slyvia Plath

A writer who has short but a productive life...

After 2 great poets who l mentioned in my other articles, it is time to learn about another great author and poet: Sylvia Plath. A woman who lived a difficult, albeit short, yet highly productive life. She endured 30 years filled with her own sorrows and brought forth numerous sentimental and emotive literary works. Let's explore more intricate details about her life and her significant literary contributions.

As I learned more about Sylvia Plath, I couldn't help but feel a deep sense of sadness for her. Here are some details about her life: She was born in Massachusetts, nearly a century after Emily Dickinson's birth. Quite a coincidence, isn't it? Like Dickinson, she too shared a profound connection with death. She lost her father at a young age. We will revisit the topic of death shortly, but first, I should mention her education and private life. She pursued her studies in England, where she crossed paths with her husband, also a poet.

So when she had her education in England, she mentioned that before she met Ted Huges who became her husband later on, she read some of his poems and she wanted to meet him. After they met, they felt finally found each other then they got married and wrote poems together but on the whole, they had a tumultuous marriage. After some time passed they moved to the United States and she worked in some different fields. She worked as a receptionist in a psychiatric unit of Massachusetts General Hospital. She learned more about psychological things. He and her husband moved a couple of times again and they moved back to England where they had their first child.

Then when she had her second pregnancy, she had a miscarriage which connected with some of her poems. It is mentioned that before the miscarriage they fought. After some time they rented a house and her husband had an affair with a woman there. At this time she had a car accident but not accurately an accident but a suicide attempt. After she learned about her husband's betrayal, they separated. Because he always had psychological issues, it affected her life.

Before her death, she had attempted to die so many times but in the end, she died with her head stuck in the oven. The nurse who cared for her found her when she came to check on her. Then she said goodbye to the world with her amazing, sentimental works such as :

Lady Lazarus'.

'Daddy'.

'The Moon and the Yew Tree'.

'You're'.

'Morning Song'.

'Poppies in October'.

'Ariel'.

'Edge'

Mad Girl's Love Song is one of the best poems that she has. Both emotional and tragic but so touchable to a human soul. Whenever l read this poem, l realize deep feelings that make people suffer.

Edge is another sentimental poem that she probably wrote about the realistic view of death. She wrote that poem only a week before her suicide. I will share just a stanza from the poem and l wish peace for her soul...

"The woman is perfected.

Her dead

The body wears the smile of accomplishment,

The illusion of a Greek necessity"
