Queer Films to Color Your Days

Expand Your Film Knowledge on Gay Culture

Looking for queer films to watch during Pride Month to expand your gay film culture? If yes, then I got you. Here are 3 queer film recommendations you probably may not know.

1-    The Way He Looks

It is a Brazillian coming-of-age film that was released in 2014. The protagonist is Leonardo, a blind highschool boy who struggles with school bullies and a restrictive mother. In his story, we see how he deals with these things while finding love with Gabriel, the new student at the school. The film births a wholesome love story between these two. Since it’s a Brazillian film, the language is Portuguese but you can definitely find it with subtitles on some streaming channels. The film’s Turkish title is “Bugün Eve Yalnız Dönmek İstiyorum” which is pretty close to the original one in Portuguese. Overall, a nice, heart-warming film to watch during Pride Month.

2-    Doukyuusei

Doukyuusei, which translates to English as “Classmates”, is a Japanese animation film. Our characters are Sajo, an honor student, and Kusakabe, a popular band member. Their paths cross when Kusakabe offers to help Sajo prepare for a school music festival. They start to get to know each other and face the difficulties of an unknown future while falling in love. It is a cute and short film to spend during your summer night.

3-    Elisa & Marcela

Elisa & Marcela is a Spanish biographical film which means it’s based on real events and people. Throughout the film, we see the discrimination and the struggles Elisa and Marcela face regarding their lesbianism. They meet at school and quickly become friends and then lovers after a while. However, Marcela’s father gets suspicious of these two girls and sends Marcela off to a far-away school. After a few years, they start to work in the same school and their relationship continues. In order to be together and get married, Elisa takes up a man’s identity. To make their lie even more trustworthy, Marcela gets herself impregnated by a local man. They get married with Elisa’s fake identity but of course in time, their lie gets revealed. This beautiful but sorrowful story shows us what it is like to be lesbians where everyone thinks it is a sin or crime. But don’t worry, it has a happy ending.
