The Dormant Cosmic Entity: Cthulhu
A glance at the product of H.P.Lovecraft's fear of deep waters.
The High Priest of the Great Old Ones, The Great Dreamer, The Sleeper of R'lyeh, there are many names attributed to the cosmic entity created by Howard Phillips Lovecraft, the father of the cosmic horror. Cthulhu was first introduced in H.P.Lovecraft's short story which is called ''The Call of Cthulhu''. H.P.Lovecraft doesn't very much mention the name Cthulhu or give any detailed backstory or the origin of Cthulhu in the story. There isn't a commonly accepted origin of Cthulhu and most of the origin stories attributed to Cthulhu are mostly made up.
It is said that Cthulhu was born on a planet called Vhoorl which is located in the twenty-third nebula. Cthulhu's father's name is Nug, Cthulhu's grandparents are called Yog-Sothoth and Shub-Niggurath, and Cthulhu's great-great-grandfather is Azathoth, which could be considered the Zeus of Outer Gods. As Azathoth was the father/ruler of the Outer Gods, Cthulhu was the father/ruler of the Great Older Ones. Cthulhu produced the Great Older Ones when he traveled to the binary star of Xoth. The Great Older Ones consist of Ghatanothoa, Ythogtha, and Zoth-Ommog. At the end of their cosmic journey, Cthulhu and the rest of the Great Older Ones traveled to Earth. Along the way, some shape-shifting aliens which are called Star Spawn of Cthulhu trailed along after Cthulhu and they built the great stone city of R'lyeh in the Pacific Ocean where Cthulhu would enter the great slumber. During the great slumber of Cthulhu, humanity evolved on Earth and the act of Cthulhu entering the human beings' dreams led to the creation of the Cult of Cthulhu. The Cult of Cthulhu grew more and more as the centuries passed and according to the short story, they are trying to wake the Sleeper of R'lyeh to take over the world.
