The Role of Technology in Education: Advantages and Disadvantages
What advantages and disadvantages has technology had since it entered our educational lives?
Technology is significant in our daily lives in today’s world. Its convenience has affected also education. Especially during the pandemic, most of the students used technology for their education. This role of technology has some advantages and disadvantages in education. For example, while accessibility and flexibility, personalized learning, interactive and fun learning are some of the advantages, inequality and the digital divide, lack of social interaction, poor quality content, and information pollution are some of the disadvantages.
Accessibility and flexibility in technology are so helpful for students that they can educate themselves and access any material whenever they want. On the Internet, educational materials are accessible 7/24. Besides, online courses are open to everyone all around the world. In this case, accessing education is very easy for most people.
Personalized learning is another advantage of technology in education. Every student has their own unique capacity and their own unique learning style. Thanks to technology, every student can create a specialized plan to study. They can organise their programs for their availability. Besides, since every student has a different learning style, they can study according to their styles. For example, some students are visual learners. They can watch some educational videos and use charts. AI-supported learning platforms are so useful for education.
Learning might be boring for some learners, especially for children. But technology can turn learning into a joyful thing. Animations, videos, and games make the learning process more engaging. For example, the app Kahoot has been used for a long time to turn learning into something more entertaining. These kinds of apps can help the students learn.
On the other hand, there are some disadvantages of technology in education. Inequality and the digital divide are two of them. Not all people have access to the Internet. In the months of the pandemic, some of the students could not use technology to continue their school lessons. This inequality makes it difficult for learners to access technology. Lack of Internet or devices, especially in rural areas, shows the disadvantage of technology.
Being online and taking education online decreases the interaction and face-to-face communication. If the whole education system were depending on technology like it used to be in the pandemic, people would not socialize as much as today. Schools, courses, and colleges help students to socialize. This lack of sociability is one of the disadvantages of technology in education.
Poor quality content and information pollution is another disadvantage of technology in education. On the Internet, there are many sources to reach information. But some of them give wrong information. Because every person can ensure information and not everyone is an expert about the topic. Learners can affect these wrong informations in their learning process. And this affects their education in the wrong way.
In conclusion, technology has a big role in education today. This role has both advantages and disadvantages. By being careful, learners can use technology for their education in a good way.
