The tale of the son of the moon

The tale of the boy whose skin is as white as pearl and his eyes as bright as silver.

A legend of Romani folklore, the tale of the son of the moon depicts the tragic story of a Romani woman who begs the moon to marry the man she loves. The moon hears the Romani woman's prayer and decides to grant her wish but sets a condition, she has to give her first-born child in exchange to come together with the man she loves. The Romani woman accepts the condition due to the fear of dying all alone. The Romani woman and the man she loves finally get married and the Romani woman gives birth to a beautiful boy. However, there is a problem. The boy has the skin color of the whitest white and his eyes are the color of the most beautiful silver. Both the Romani woman and the man is appalled by the appearance of their newborn son since both of them have dark skin and dark-colored eyes. The man that the Romani woman dearly loved gets furious, thinking that the explanation for the appearance of the son could be only that the Romani woman deceived him and slept with another man. He stabs her to death and leaves the baby on a mountain all by himself so that he would die there.

According to the legend, whenever the baby cries the moon changes its shape in order to cradle and comfort the baby. The legend was later on adapted to a song and in the song, it is said that the moon wants to be a mother but cannot find anyone to have a child with.
