Halloween is a holiday celebrated each year on October 31, and Halloween 2023 will occur on Tuesday, October 31. Carving pumpkins, trick-or-treating, and wearing scary costumes are some of the time-honored traditions of Halloween. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints. Soon, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween.
If we come to its actual history;
The history of Halloween dates back to the Samhain Festival of the Celts, the Pagan people who lived in Great Britain, Ireland, and Northern France two thousand years ago. Samhain, known as a day of winter arrival and the change of seasons, is in Welsh culture in Northern Scotland. At the Samhain Festival, fires and candles that are lit in the sun are lit and relatives who are dead are remembered. Thanks to this festival, it is believed that the bond with the dead was established. Besides these, at the festival; Considering that the dead will come to visit, tableware is established and various drinks are served. During the winter, with the spirits and fairies of the dead happy at that time; health, happiness, and good luck were believed to prevail. According to a different belief, it is narrated that the dead visited the world in October. For this reason, those who attend this festival are wearing different costumes and masks so that the souls believed to be navigating the festival area do not recognize themselves.
Identifying with witches, fairies, and demons over time, the Samhain Festival merged with Pomono, known as the Romans' Day of the Dead, and Feralia, after the Romans invaded Celtic lands in the first century. By the seventh century, after Christians declared November 1 the Day of Saints, it began to be celebrated as today's eve. The October 31, called Holly Evening, which has the meaning of the Holy Evening, continued to be celebrated as Halloween, over time.
But at this time the situation is a little different. Children and adults organize a dress ball at the nearest weekend to Halloween in general. Guests at these organized parties; dressed like witches, ghosts, or horror movie characters. And they have a fun time together. And this way it is celebrated today.
In summary, in the last case of Halloween coming today, it became a feast that was completely celebrated as a recreational vehicle. All people took the witch hunt if it was believed that the witches were born on Halloween.
