Why animal testing should be banned?
I tried to explain the animal testing issue through this blog.
Testing on animals, which is a testing method used by most popular product brands, is a controversial and relevant topic. Last year, after a video was uploaded on social media named Save Ralph, which was recorded by Humane Society International and supported by celebrities and influencers such as Ricky Gervais and Zac Efron, this topic really turned into a huge phenomenon. Yet, testing on animals is not a method that started only in this decade, it has been used for a long time from vaccination trials to beauty and cleaning products. Actually, this problem stems from the Government of China’s testing policy. Because animal testing is compulsory in China, most brands that want to sell their products in the biggest market in the world have to test their products on animals so that they can gain entry into this gigantic market. But, I believe that animal testing can't be allowed even though whatever it brings.
First of all, animals are subjected to much torture and cruelty during testing. They are generally treated quite poorly and suffer from bad living conditions. This is not only true for the testing itself, but also for their overall conditions such as making animals starving in crowded, dirty, and narrow spaces. It is obvious that we put them in a way that slowly brings them to their death, and in this way, they are poisoned, tortured, and hurt. Moreover, Testing on animals contradicts religions and ethics. In addition, in some religions and spiritual beliefs, it is advocated that living organisms should be protected and left to die in peace; therefore, animal testing must be considered to be illegal in theocratic countries because they are managed by religion and beliefs law
Secondly, It is proved that outcomes of research that are used animal testing cannot be relied upon when it comes to human beings. It has been shown many times that the testing done on animals cannot be equated with testing done on human beings. So, In this century, science and technology give us opportunities to obtain more exact results from testing without any animals’ dying. In addition, Even though some animals' DNA is similar to humans', many medicines that have been successfully tested on animals have failed to give the same successful results for humans. In other words, animal testing does not always give a hundred percent reliable outcomes from research; in these situations, animals are killed for the sake of nothing.
However, supporters of animal testing think that animal testing is essential for providing human health and safety. However, Although this was a real situation in the past, animal testing is not an indispensable method in the 21st Century. Thanks to advanced science and technology, today there are so many reliable methods for testing, which enable us to test without hurting anybody and bring more precise results, such as bacterial culture, cell, and tissue culture, physical-chemical tests, and data banks, and cadaver tests.
In conclusion, Testing is a very important process to unveil the repercussions of products and examine their efficiency, and it should be mandatory. But, while there were no alternative testing methods formerly, today there exist a lot of methods. So, animal testing is redundant in this century. I believed that if we all behave and consume consciously, we can change the perspective of the brands and governments, and we can save our friends from cruelty.
