12 Angry Men

A Psychological Approach about the film 12 Angry Men.

12 Angry Men is a 1957 film directed by Sidney Lumet. The film tells the story of 12 men who argue about the trial of an 18-year-old boy and whether he should be sentenced to death. The movie takes place in a single location. Despite this, it is a movie that never gets boring. Being in a single place did not have a bad effect as it aroused curiosity.

I am not sure if the child is guilty or not. I can't say guilty or not guilty. But I am sure that the case was not handled very well in court. Many topics have not been fully examined. The evidence needed to be examined better in court. The real issue is not whether this child is guilty or not, but how 12 men approach this case with their prejudices. Each character interprets the case based on their previous life events.

This movie can be examined in terms of social psychology. Concepts related to adaptation to the group are seen in a very understandable way thanks to this movie. For example, in the first vote, some jurors raise their hands late when voting guilty because they are unsure. However, the confident attitude of one jury member and the time pressure of another jury member talking about the match time push the undecided jury to comply with the group decision. At this point, it is impressive that jury number 8 gave a different vote. The reason why he voted differently is that he had previously investigated the case by going to the child's neighborhood and had strong suspicions.

At this point, I think the fact that this juror is not influenced by other jurors when making a decision is related to the fact that he is more of an individual than the others. In addition to being a character who can make his own decisions, he is also equipped to persuade others. The fact that he explains things not only by talking but also by showing them, such as pulling the same knife from his pocket as the murderer's knife or portraying the old eyewitness, shows that he has a high persuasive ability. He manages to impress others by standing brave and determined. He is not oppressed in the group. The minority influences the majority with this character's consistency while defending his opinion.

I think you should watch this movie. You will love it. Enjoy watching.
