Black Mirror "Nosedive"
A thrilling dystopia "Nosedive"
Have you ever imagined living in a world where people rate each other and a society ranked by the scoring system? The TV show Black Mirror features this chilling dystopia world in its third season, episode “Nosedive.”
In this dystopian world, every interaction’s worth is determined by a rating system, whether it is a stranger or a friend. While a lower score may result in social isolation, a higher rating opens better opportunities.
The protagonist, Lacie Pound, is desperate to increase her rating because she wishes to attend her friend's exclusive wedding as a bridesmaid. However, her desperate desire to get higher scores goes out of control and leads to her downfall.
The episode refers to the pressure to appear perfect and seek constant validation from others. It also shows the transactional, insincere, and shallow aspects of relationships where the main aim is to gain higher scores. Even so, when Lacie’s childhood friend Naomi Blestow hears about Lacie’s low score, she disinvites her from her wedding and turns her back on Lacie.
The episode offers a thrilling fictional world; the shallowness of human relationships displaying the hidden human loneliness in some parts is touching as well.
