La Règle du jeu

A brief critic of the movie "La Règle du jeu"

"La Règle du jeu" (The Rules of the Game) is a very impressive film directed by Jean Renoir and released in 1939. Although it seems like a comedy movie, the movie ends in tragedy.

Andre is a pilot and when he arrives in Paris, he declares his love for Christine in an interview. Christine is married to Robert. Robert also has a mistress. All the characters gather for a hunting party at Robert and Christine's house. Confused relationships appear throughout the film. Complex relationships exist not only in the rich bourgeois class but also among those who work from home. Everyone plays the game according to the rules. The only person who doesn't follow the rules is Andre. He is punished at the end of the movie anyway.

Although the film seems to depict the moral corruption in French society, it contains more universal and political messages in the background. The hypocrisy and insensitivity of people, the ease with which they tell lies, and the fact that everyone is aware of this and plays the game according to the rules are presented to the audience in a very striking way. Not only the bourgeoisie but also the working class that emulates them are criticized in the film. In this respect, everyone can feel responsible while watching this movie.

This movie is a masterpiece that must be watched. When it was first released, it was censored and confiscated in many countries, including France, but it was released again years later. I'm sure you'll love it. Enjoy watching.
