On the Concepts of Violence and Conflict
A closer look at the concepts of conflict and violence
Violence is a phenomenon that has existed since human history. Violence, which occurs in different types and extents, should be handled sensitively as a concept that threatens the individual, society, nature, and the world. When dealing with violence in the modern world, it is necessary to determine a multidimensional perspective. Various class and cultural categories such as women, children, elderly, disabled, animals, environment, and minorities support the multidimensional structure of violence. Violence as an element of crime is reciprocated within the framework of legal norms. In this context, violence, which turns into a weapon of crime, makes its destructive character felt at all levels of society.
Violence is a crisis that occurs as a result of a communication crisis. Communication crises can bring about many consequences. Conflict is the most prominent of these consequences. Conflict is an unpleasant struggle to claim a right over the other person or to disable that person. Conflict can occur between two people, as well as between a group of people or even large communities. The formation of a conflict environment can be explained by the emergence of individuals' differences in needs and ideology. The conflict environment between individuals who unite in a common feeling or establish a bond carries a higher risk of tension. Reconciliation methods are used to end the tension. In this way, possible elements of violence are tried to be prevented. In this case, if one of the parties blocks the path of reconciliation, the doors of violence are opened.
Violence occurs as a result of conflict. It draws the parties in like a storm growing over the communication crisis. Violence, which varies according to the way of perception, the value judgments, and the laws of society, covers all kinds of actions against the physical and spiritual integrity of people. It may be a direct attempt against life or property, or it may occur in a way that imprisons the individual psychologically. People's living spaces, economic freedoms, emotional states, ways of expressing themselves and even their identities can be threatened by violence. Therefore, the primary way to deal with all types of conflict and violence is to make the culture of reconciliation prevail. Strengthening individuals' self-awareness and self-love, changing their perspectives, creating awareness, and recognizing love and compassion are just some of these ways.
