One Day

Be ready for tears whether from laughter or sadness.

“One Day, the drama series based on the best-selling book of the same name by David Nicholls, centers on Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew, who meet on July 15, 1988, the night of their graduation, before parting ways the following morning. We see the two on the same day year after year, catching up with each other’s lives sometimes together, sometimes apart. At times, it is brutally heartbreaking to see the two trying not to cross the line of friendship given their feelings toward one another. They hold back as much as possible but sometimes it is just not enough.

It is not just their relationship that makes the audience binge-watch the series. It is also the feeling you get as if you are a time traveler getting to observe the lives of two people from the late 80s to 2000s, arguably the best time to be in your 20s and 30s. The smooth transition of technological developments reminds us that this is a story of the past but still cannot retain us from feeling so close to them.

It may be a bittersweet love story, but it is definitely a hopeful one in terms of friendship and keeping in touch with people you care about. Often in life, we feel like we parted ways with people for good when all it takes is to call them or even text them “what’s up”. This series will fill you with nostalgia and may even urge you to call a friend you’ve lost contact with.

“One Day" is a special production that takes us through a whirlwind of emotions. I enjoyed how it portrayed all the possibilities in life, particularly as a young adult. It showed how expectations can be overwhelming, how sometimes giving up may feel like the only option, and the importance of saying hi to that person you see across the hall.

I hope one day, you’ll watch it.
