Pre-Raphaelite Movement

A Brief Outlook to Pre-Raphaelite Movement.

Pre-Raphaelite Movement started with a group of artist poets namely, William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais and Dante Gabriel Rosetti. They were all young artists. This group came together in 1848 to found a secret group, Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. This group studied at painting at the Royal academy. Of course there is a reason that why this group came together.

They were disgruntled with the conditions of art and painting at those times in the Royal Academy, and their purpose was to restore the painting and literature, they wanted to go back before Italian painter Raphael because, Pre-Raphaelite Broterhood said that painting should not pay more attention to conventional rules and at those times painting became more conventional. So, they wanted to return art to the condition of novelty and honesty in their works like before the time of Raphael.

Therefore,  this group began to exhibit their paintings on the other hand they caused many negotiations because they were giving so many details in their works for providing the naturalistic atmosphere in addition, this movement’s painters were inspired by the poets that give many details in their poems such as; Shakespeare, Danteand and A.Tennyson. They illustrated many works of them.

This group, which criticized the situation of art of the age, would also lead to an Aesthetic Movement in the future.

Here is an example of this movement;

John William Waterhouse who is another member of Pre-Raphaelite Movement, illustrated Alfred Tennyson's poem namely, Lady Of Shalott. This is a painting that contains almost all the details of the poem and also you can see the naturalistic atmosphere in it. If you want to read the poem, too, you can find it in this link;
