Taylor swift and how she reshaped the music industry
Taylor Swift's Reclaiming her intellecual property has made way for a new era in the music industry.
In the past, copyrights over intellectual properties were not reserved for the creators, but for the label that signs them on. Recent action taken by Taylor Swift in reclaiming her music has changed the music industry as we know it.
As many may know, Taylor Swift started recording her albums when she was a teenager, this allowed many labels and records to take advantage of her and detain her from owning the rights to her own music, this didn't only happen to her, but many other music stars who started young, such as Prince, Kesha, TLC, and many more.
The entire process of her re-recording her albums started when she and her previous label, Big Machine Records, disputed over the rights of her albums when she refused to renew their contract, and they ultimately denied her buying back her albums at any price. Taylor Swift may not own the rights to her physical recordings, or what in the music industry referred to as "The Masters", however, she owns the rights to her lyrics and music.
Nowadays, Taylor Swift, is in the process of re-recording her albums, and though many may question how reproducing and marketing essentially the same albums would make any difference, it is that by republishing her art, she was able to do it on her own terms, without the need for any censorship; not to mention, that now she has full rights to all her re-recorded albums and records and therefore, she gets to keep 100% of the profits. Moreover, even though her original albums are still being sold, she has already secured a spot on top with her new recordings, and the fans will always want to support the artist directly, rather than a nameless label no one truly cares about. As for future collaborations, many artists and labels would rather collaborate directly with the artist rather through a middle man.
By Taylor Swift reclaiming her life's work and facing the corporations who kept her down, she has made the path for a new era in music, bringing attention to the injustice young artists are subjected to, which will make negotiations in the music industry more transparent and fair.
