Who wouldn’t like to watch a film and find meaning in their lives? This influence of cinema is strengthened by factors such as a good plot, well-written characters, and the choice of music. Today, we will continue to our journey of acknowledging striking examples of music’s power in films.
In the mood for love-Shigeru Umebayashi
For such melancholic film as In the Mood for Love, Yumeji’s theme is like a poem written about longing, nostalgia and romance. Shigeru Umebayashi’s heart-wrenching waltz and Wong Kar Wai’s beautiful cinematography together echoes character’s unspoken feelings. Wong Kar Wai uses it 9 times throughout the film, each moment perfectly mirrors the story’s theme of love and restraint.
Amelie-Yann Tiersen
Yann Tiersen’s moving melodies capture the essence of film and take you on a journey in Paris. With its emotionl depth, Comptine d’un autre été: L’après-midi feels intimate and personal. The film’s director Jean-Pierre Jeunet greatly impressed by the Tiersen’s work, and wanted him to score the film instead of Micheal Nyman who was initially planned to write the film’s musics.
Requiem for a Dream-Clint Mansell
Composed for the 2000 film Requiem for a Dream by Clint Mansell, Lux Aeterna aligns with the film’s psychological depth and intense atmosphere. Mansell partnered with the director Darren Aronofsky for his many films -from the director’s first film Pi to Black Swan- which he was nominated both for Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media and Best Original Soundtrack.
Psycho- Bernard Hermann
Still adapted into many work, Bernard Hermann’s screeching violin represents the fear, tension, and panic in musical form. Hitchcock’s 1960 film Psycho keeps the audience in a state of unease and leaves alone with Anthony Perkins’ character Norman Bates’ fractured psyche.
These musics does not only complement films but they also create an entire emotional world, each capturing the audience. Whether Clint Mansell's intense composition or Yann Tiersen's touching music, these masterpieces perfectly match the film's theme and remind us the power of music in storytelling.
