Why Do We Listen To Music When We Are Sad or Happy?
We seek solace in music when we feel sad, don't we?
Ever came across this feeling of happiness that you just want to blast your favorite songs or happy songs while enjoying every bit of your happiness? It is the same with sadness. We tend to seek our solace in songs when we feel emotions. We don’t usually look for songs when we are angry or frustrated over something. We don’t have enough songs that express emotions other than happiness or sadness.
Mostly, songs are made with upbeat music for happiness whereas, for sadness, songs are slow. Lyrics also play an important role in a song as lyrics express the emotions, mood, and meanings of the song. There have been times when I was feeling a strong emotion that neither fell into the happiness nor sadness radar. I wanted to express it through music but was unable to because it has always been songs with heartbreak, happiness, and never other emotions.
We often choose music as a medium to express our emotions because we find that somewhere the lyrics speak to us in a way we are unable to understand. Music is not the only thing we relate to when we feel extreme emotions. It is also quotes, inspirational videos, and articles written online. However, music tops all the categories to be the only thing that is relatable to us.
We are sometimes, confused with our emotions. We cannot decipher the emotions at hand and work through them. So, we look for sources that can help us work through it. Identify our emotions for ourselves. The confusion can lead us to have a problem expressing it. We find solace in music, quotes, or anything that can express our emotions for us.
