90's Most Cool Women of Alternative Music
The artistic expressions through the rebellion.
Lately, I've been listening to the singers from the '90s. I especially enjoy more alternative styles. So consider this list as a personal liking of myself.
Shirley Manson
From Edinburg, she had a rough teenagehood. Because of the heavy bullying, Shirley Manson grew up with depression and body dysmorphia. Her dream job was to become an actress but she couldn't accept to acting school. Wandering around little jobs, she begins to sing in bands. Finally, she reached the top with the infamous alternative band Garbage. Her specific singing style made great recognition and Shirley Manson became the most memorable face of '90s music.
Pj Harvey
Having musical diversity, Polly Jean Harvey made the scene of the 90's music era. Her deep voice range adds sentimental feelings to her songs. She has poetic and artistic lyrics towards her musical career. PJ Harvey is so talented that she gained Mercury Prize with her first solo album Dry (1992). The album reached immediately fame. Dry was influential at that time, perfectly representing the rawness of alternative rock.
Courtney Love
Despite her controversial behaviors and the rumors spreading around her about Kurt Cobain's death, she was one of the faces of grunge rock. Being the front singer in the band Hole, she left her mark. A hole was against the rules, criticizing the stereotypes, kidding with society. Making fun of something is one of the essential traits of Courtney Love. Because of her too unique sense of humor, she often comes off hard to get along with.
Miki Berenyi
Born in England, having Japanese and Hungarian blood, Miki Berenyi is an iconic being. In the band Lush, they made dreamy shoegaze with a mix of alternative rock. What I most like about her is the fashion style. Her bright red hair caught the eyes and goes really well in dreamlike effect to the stage presence. All the women on this list draw attention with regard to their very own style, rebellious acts, and free spirits.
