Anime Recommandation: Jujutsu Kaisen

An evaluation on the highly popular anime Jujutsu Kaisen and a recommendation to anime fans who are looking for a new series.

Illustrated by Gege Akutami, Jujutsu Kaisen is a Japanese manga series that has been serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump since March 2018. The popular manga series was animated in October 2020 with 24 episodes. The second season is also on its way, planned for release in July 2023. If you are interested in dark fantasy-action-type animes and having a hard time spotting a series to draw you into, Jujutsu Kaisen could easily satisfy your expectations.

Plot

Jujutsu Kaisen' narrative is based on curses. Curses are born from the negative feelings and thoughts of a human being. Basic courses are just tangled and disturb the person they are born from, hence advanced ones have their own consciousness and special powers, which makes them very dangerous. Jujutsu sorcerers are people who are born with the ability to control the cursed energy flow in their bodies. Therefore, they are the only ones who can fight back against the curses. Just like curses, Jujutsu sorcerers also have a classification of their own, based on their abilities to control the cursed energy. The struggle between the curses and Jujutsu sorcerers has continued for ages.

Itadori Yuji, the main protagonist of the series, is a weird but typical high school teenager with superb physical attributes. The story begins with Yuji's grandfather's death wishes to him; always helps people in need and, when the time comes, dies surrounded by friends. While Yuji mourned his grandfather's death in his own way, his classmates, like every typical weirdo teenager, have an evocative seance, not knowing they have a very powerful cursed talisman in their hands. A Jujutsu sorcerer, Megumi Fushiguro, tries to save the ill-fated students who awaken a curse. Yuji, without realizing what he sees, tries to help Megumi to fight the curse. In hopes of saving his friends and Megumi, Yuji eats the talisman in order to awaken his cursed energy, despite Megumi's warning. The talisman Yuji ates is the finger of Sukuna, an ancient cursed object that belongs to the king of the curses. By eating the finger, Yuji becomes the vessel of Sukuna but, surprisingly, has the ability to control it. Gojo Satoru, Megumi's sensei, arrives on the scene and quickly takes things under his control. Surprised by Yuji's ability to control Sukuna, Gojo brings him to Tokyo Jujutsu sorcerers high school and the story continues.

Overall, Jujutsu Kaisen has a very interesting story filled with unusual character personalities, ups and downs, and congenial structure. Appealing to both veterans and newcomers, Jujutsu Kaisen is an anime that every anime fan needs to add to their list.
