Callan Method in ELT

A special approach that enables students to get fully immersed in the language is the Callan Method.

The Callan Method is a quick and engaging method for teaching and learning languages that uses facilitated discussions. The minute they enter the classroom, students are encouraged to speak during the lessons.

Throughout the lesson, the students actively practiced their English by conversing. While teaching children all aspects of English, the teacher corrects every error in real-time and uses examples. The learner becomes more fluent with repetition, but more significantly, repetition boosts their confidence and helps them overcome their fear of public speaking. The technique will enhance speaking, listening, and comprehension abilities.

Throughout the entire lesson, the teacher does not stop talking.

  • The teacher uses a book to ask questions.
  • Each exercise involves using a specific word, phrase, or section of grammar.
  • If you missed it the first time, the teacher repeats the question.
  • The teacher provides the first two or three words to stimulate your response. This makes it easier to start speaking even if you do not know the answer. Additionally, it prevents you from translating or considering vocabulary or grammar.

Teachers ask questions quickly, and students answer them clearly and quickly. Teachers correct pupils' errors by responding collectively.

The disadvantage of this strategy is that pupils need more time to translate what the teachers are saying because they must respond quickly with the help of the professors. Students will unintentionally respond in English, developing an English-speaking brain.

Here are seven reasons why this approach is deemed ideal for online language learning:

1. A Sharper Focus

Lessons using the Callan Method follow a pattern of questions and answers. These are open-ended questions that the teacher randomly poses to the class. The student is always curious when they will be quizzed. The teacher seeks out the pupils who appear to be least interested and approaches them with questions. With conventional techniques, it is the responsibility of the pupils to maintain their focus; with the Callan Method, it is the teacher's responsibility to ensure this.

2. Constantly talking

Due to the short speaking time allotted to students in traditional classes, there are many opportunities for distraction. The Callan Method encourages students to speak as much as possible to acquire a language. When they are not speaking, they are concentrated on listening to the questions and are prepared to respond when necessary.

3. Dynamic methods of instruction

English can be learned quickly and effectively with the Callan Method. It has a far higher success rate than conventional learning because it is more like a game. Children pick up information more quickly because it is enjoyable. The professors speak at a rate of 200–230 words per minute, which is similar to the speech of native speakers. The pupils are forced to pay attention and study during a session thanks to this method of continuously asking questions and selecting students randomly to respond.

 4. Makes reflexes quicker

We have been wordless, especially while speaking a foreign language. The Callan Method's quick dynamic approach makes it possible for students to recall information more quickly. The strategy relies on long-term memory to compose sentences correctly without having to think about it too much, which it does.

5. Overcoming a speaking phobia

Speaking anxiety and shyness are significant issues for many students. These anxieties are the first things to disappear while using the Callan Method. Students must become accustomed to speaking in front of their peers frequently in an overly dramatic situation. As a result, speaking English outside the classroom is much simpler and less stressful.

6. Quick rectification and repetition

A Callan Method lesson requires much repetition of the content to grasp better and remember it. Every time a pupil makes a mistake, they are also continually corrected. The teacher can listen and correct each pupil as much as possible thanks to repetition and prompt correction.

7. Equal speaking time for students

Making sure the silent children participate in speaking as much as the more extroverted pupils is one of the major concerns in any classroom. The Callan Method gives each student equal talking time to guarantee that the class advances together.
