Fashion Next Chapter: From TikTok To The Catwalk
Where is Fashion Going?
The fashion industry is a dynamic one. Things go out of style; new models, it-girls, and runway looks are constantly debuting. Kate Moss, Gisele Bündchen, Tyra Banks, Cindy Crawford and many other iconic names made a splash on the runway. Vogue was publishing the trends in their magazines, designers were coming up with the styles, and fashion was this alluring powerhouse. Has it changed, though? Of course.
In its most basic form, it is now available. Overconsumption, influencers, fast fashion brands like Shein, social media, and mass production of apparel cause trends to change every week. A new level of "want to be" is emerging and is beginning to gain popularity.
All of us have witnessed trends come full circle. Minimalism of the 90s came and went. 60s dresses: been there, done that. The fashion industry rises and falls. The internet has always been a part of fashion, especially since the Google Images introduction because of Jennifer Lopez's green dress. Nowadays, TikTok has become a significant fashion trendsetter in, connecting high fashion runways with all of us. The shift from street style to couture used to happen slowly, sometimes taking months or years but now thanks to that platform it is happening at lightning speed.
TikTok's impact goes beyond aesthetics to include the structure of fashion shows themselves. Designers are experimenting with the way they display their collections, frequently choosing digital displays that appeal to TikTok users. In line with the fast-paced nature of TikTok, this change has led to shorter, more captivating presentations that grab attention.
In addition to influencing our wardrobe choices, this changing dynamic reinterprets what it means to be fashionable in a world growing more interconnected by the day. TikTok's influence on the fashion industry is only going to increase as it grows, opening the door for new trends that speak especially to Gen Z. But this raises another question: how long can the essence of originality, which is the core idea of fashion, be preserved?
