Husbands and Wives
The chaotic order of life, relationships, and love.(spoiler-free zone)
The chaotic order of life, relationships, and love.
An ode to humane emotions and the raw chaotic nature of relationships, Husbands, and Wives dive deep into falling relationships and shifting dynamics by portraying couples falling in and out of love. Woody Allen's 1992 Husbands and Wives does not fail to impress and discomfort the audience at the same time.
' It's the Second Law of Thermodynamics: sooner or later everything turns to shit. That's my phrasing, not the Encyclopedia Britannica.'
Husbands and Wives follows two couples on the ledge beyond the edge; struggling to confront the unhappiness and mundanity of their relationships. The way the story is conveyed is through a handheld camera that shakes and discomforts the audience creating a feeling of anxiety. This discomfort is a mirror to the relationships as both of the couples struggle to live through a falling relationship and mid-life crisis.
As the movie progresses, we get to know each of the characters' dilemmas, insecurities, and realities. The relationships are far from being functional but what is delivered is that sometimes love fades, human emotions are complex, and human nature is itself unpredictable.
It's a satirical take on love, sex, and life itself but it's questioning the existence of everything that makes us and asks the question whether or not we will live up to our expectations. The characters find out that maybe what is missing in their relationship is there hiding in another's heart but what is real is that we are pursuing an illusion since as individuals, we are living in a void and imagining ourselves in perfect relationships with perfect partners. Yet Husbands and Wives teaches that nothing is not what we idealize them to be as neither we nor our partners are flawless. Yes, in relationships there is sex, there is passion, there is fulfillment but at the same time relationships are messy, dysfunctional and as chaotic as human nature.
