MISSIO: A Music Recommendation for Blended Genre Lovers

Where Alternative, Electronic, and Rock Collide.

Are you a music enthusiast who craves blended sounds and raw emotions in songs? If you are the type of person who puts their time and effort into discovering authentic music regularly, I have a great recommendation for you: MISSIO.

It was during the pandemic when I discovered MISSIO, and they have been one of my favorite groups ever since. Their outstanding ability to mix multiple genres into a single song, their raw and unfiltered lyrics, and their success in evoking different emotions make them extremely special to their listeners.

Let’s first get to know MISSIO a bit before delving into the reasons why they are so worthy of listening. MISSIO is an American electronic alternative duo formed in 2014 in Austin, Texas. The group comprises frontman Matthew Brue, whose haunting vocals captivate listeners, and producer David Butler, who brings innovative soundscapes to life.

The duo takes its name from the Latin word for "mission," reflecting Matthew Brue’s journey through addiction and recovery. The name matches their music’s vibe, harmonizing vulnerability and power.

Why MISSIO deserves a place on your playlist

Their Music Feels Real

MISSIO’s songs aren’t "good," but they’re deeply relatable. MISSIO’s lyrics delve into both deeply personal and universal topics like mental health struggles, addressing a sense of hope (songs like "Can You Feel the Sun" and "I See You"), addiction and recovery (tracks like "Twisted", “Everybody Gets High" and “Wolves”), rebellion and misfit ("Middle Fingers" and "Rad Drugz"), with the emphasis of the importance of human connection, empathy, and understanding (“Sing To Me”, “Can You Feel The Sun”)

They’re Genre-Benders

One of the reasons why I LOVE this duo is their ability to use so many different genres in a single song so unpredictably. MISSIO’s music feels like nothing else. Their tracks smoothly blend dark electronic beats with rock guitar riffs and layered synths. They always manage to make a distinctive blend of electronic beats, alternative rock elements, hip-hop, and indie-pop components, and melodic vocals so effortlessly, bringing both vulnerability and strength to the songs with Matthew Brue’s emotive voice and rebellious character.

They Mix Rebellion with Vulnerability

MISSIO’s signature style combines a rebellious attitude with moments of raw emotion. Tracks like “I Don’t Give A...” encourage you to meet your inner rebel, and songs like "Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea” help you embrace your own emotions. MISSIO keeps the balance between the edgy and vulnerable sense in most of their songs.

They Embrace the Misfits

MISSIO’s music often celebrates individuality and non-conformity, resonating with those who have ever felt like an outsider. With songs like “We Are Who We Are" and “The Darker The Weather/The Better The Man,” they remind us that it’s okay to be yourself.

If these are enough reasons for you to give MISSIO a shot, I would love to recommend their 2017 album, Loner, which is my favorite. Packed with great beats and raw emotions, it would be a great start to an obsession. And if you find yourself hooked, you can also check out artists like "K.Flay," “Son Lux", “8 Graves", and "Stephen” which offer comparable blended genres and similar empowering themes.
