Some Aspects of James Joyce

A short article about James Joyce.

James Joyce was born in Dublin/Ireland, and as known, Ireland has been living by the rules of the Catholic religion for centuries. Like all Dubliners, Joyce also got an education at Catholic schools, but when he grew up, he refused the Catholic church because he was not okay with the vision of the Catholic church. His situation was the key to his life because this event's effect gave direction to his life and pen. Thanks to this event, readers witnessed a great writer who was the master of the technique of stream of consciousness. This brief background shows that he suffered the confusion of identity since he led a different life, although he was brought up differently.

He mentioned all these things in his novel, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. It is like bildungsroman, and it shows the character's development. Readers witness the characters' growth process, and in this book, this growth process belongs to James Joyce.

Readers see many things that James Joyce himself did in his life in this novel. For example, the character in the book, namely Stephen Dedalus, goes to the same school as James Joyce. In addition, Dedalus is a mythical figure as known. He built a labyrinth for the king later; the king put him in this labyrinth as a prison in order to escape, and he made wings and escaped by flying across the sea. It is very symbolic because we see an artist's flight from exile in the book. And also, James Joyce went to the Europa because he felt like an exile in Dublin; Dublin did not suit his soul.

The divergent writer has more masterpieces, these are;

Ulysses

Dubliners

Finnegans Wake
