Thelma and Louise: The story of two besties

A journey that changes lives

For those who have not watched Thelma and Louise, this is a sign for them to watch this groundbreaking movie.

Thelma and Louise is a movie directed by Ridley Scott and was released in 1991. It can be said that Thelma and Louise are both a road movie and a crime movie because the movie starts with the planning of the two days vacation and continues until the end of the journey; however, when they are on the road, they get involved in a crime and we witness all that they do to escape from the police.

To give you an opinion about the movie, I feel the need to give you some details about the characters and the storyline. Thelma (Geena Davis) is a housewife, married to a controlling and unloving husband, Darryl, and Louise (Susan Sarandon) works as a waiter and has a boyfriend. These two women want to get away from their daily lives and decide to go on a vacation. On their way, when they stop by the roadside pub, things get out of control, and the kind of the journey changes into escaping. While on the road, Thelma sees J.D., a wanderer, and upon his request, they take J.D. to their car and continue. Unfortunately, they take a blow from him, too. J.D. is actually a robber and he steals Louise's money. After this incident, Thelma feels guilty and she robs a store with the tactic she learned from J.D. From this point on they get closer to the end.

This movie gives important details about society and patriarchy. For example, when Louise says to Thelma "Is he your husband or your father?", what we can see from this is that women's actions 'need' to be approved by men. But thankfully this notion has started to lose its meaning. Another thing worth mentioning is that when Louise says "People have seen you cheek to cheek to that guy, they would not believe us.", she was unfortunately right because although people do not know what happen outside of the bar, they would probably not find Thelma and Louise right. As most of you know some people tend to find men fair in cases like rape or murder.

Thelma and Louise, towards the end of their journey.

Their end comes from their own hands, which is to say that they do not accept any help, they decide to drive the car to the Canyon. Also, one important quote is "Louise, no matter what happens, I'm glad I came with you.". On their road, both Thelma and Louise experience things they have not before and they make their own choices.

Overall, this is a great movie to watch to get a different point of view and to look from another perspective.
