"You're on your own, kid"
Because you are always on your own and you always have been.
I wanted to write an article about a song from the album "Midnights", which was released on October 21, 2022, as the tenth studio album of American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift and described as "the story of 13 sleepless nights scattered in my life".
This song has become one of my favorite songs, not only on the album but in life. Wherever I see the pieces of my soul, I act as if they belong to me, and they become the most precious to me. That's what this song is for me. This song, which I think describes the process of youth and young adulthood, has the power to inspire you.
Summer went away, still, the yearning stays
I play it cool with the best of them
I wait patiently, he's gonna notice me
It's okay, we're the best of friends
Anyway
I hear it in your voice, you're smoking with your boys
I touch my phone as if it's your face
I didn't choose this town, I dream of getting out
There's just one who could make me stay
All my days
These words correspond to the years 2019 and 2023 to me. It's about confusion, absurd high school love stories, and not being able to fit in where you live. It's about a small-town girl with big dreams, how she gets stuck there when she falls in love and gets stuck on love while dreaming of leaving town and wanting to stay where she is. When you're young you don't know which is more valuable. In fact, maybe love is above all else.
From sprinkler splashes to fireplace ashes
I waited ages to see you there
I search the party of better bodies
Just to learn that you never cared
You're on your own, kid
You always have been
Even if you're friends, it can be hurtful to realize that when you're looking for a pair of eyes in crowds, waiting to see a single person in one place, and that he doesn't really care. Even if you are not at the beginning of everything, you realize at the end that you are on your own in everything and you will always remain so. No matter how much you look for the beauty of this one person that you try to see in others, you will not see it, but it will come to an end, too.
I see the great escape
So long, Daisy May
I picked the petals, he loves me not
Something different bloomed
Writing in my room
I play my songs in the parking lot
I'll run away
When you start to pluck the leaves of the flower you hold by saying “he loves me” or "he doesn't love me”, and you don't leave a single leaf on the flower, you want to believe the result that “he loves me”. While you are not so surprised by how big your dreams are, you start to act honestly in the songs you write and write dozens of love poems. It's a kind of escape for you and you start to feel different from everyone else. Because you dare to shrug people off and leave the city with your own dreams. You cannot explain that you are the same to those who do not understand your heart when everyone else thinks that you have changed.
From sprinkler splashes to fireplace ashes
I called a taxi to take me there
I search the party of better bodies
Just to learn that my dreams aren't rare
You're on your own, kid
You always have been
You try to meet other people just to forget the past because you feel that way. You want to be the main character of every story, but even in your own, you are a supporting role because your dreams are not that rare. You realize that you are exaggerating when you think that thinking that you are different sets you free. But you are also very insecure. But you're on your own and you know you'll get through it somehow. Because you have to come.
From sprinkler splashes to fireplace ashes
I gave my blood, sweat, and tears for this
I hosted parties and starved my body
Like I'd be saved by a perfect kiss
The jokes weren't funny, I took the money
My friends from home don't know what to say
I looked around in a blood-soaked gown
And I saw something they can't take away
'Cause there were pages turned with the bridges burned
Everything you lose is a step you take
So make the friendship bracelets
Take the moment and taste it
You've got no reason to be afraid
You're on your own, kid
Yeah, you can face this
You're on your own, kid
You always have been
While you used to wake up early in the morning because of your intense love for one person, now you give your blood, sweat, and tears for your dreams. Even though you hate mornings, you wander the streets even the sun has no idea that it will rise again. When you meet unfunny jokes and bullies and realize who your real friends are, you realize you've turned many pages of your own book and you still have a long way to live. You keep trying, remembering that everything you lose is a step you take. You realize that your moments are not in yesterday or tomorrow, but in today and you start savoring them. At the end of everything, you realize that you are with yourself in every good and bad moment. Because you are always on your own and you always have been.
