Aristophanes' Myth of Where Love Came From

Where did love come from?

In Platon's work Symposium, during a meeting where all the intellects including Socrates meet, Aristophanes begins to talk about the origins of love, in other words, where love came from. He says that originally there were three kinds of human beings males, females, and human beings that are partly male and female. These creatures were very powerful because they had four arms and four legs, and they could see everywhere because they had two faces. They were so powerful that one day they decided that they could defeat the dwellers of Olympos. Having such strong confidence in themselves, these creatures attacked the Olympian gods but unfortunately, they weren't as strong as the Olympian Gods and their attack ended up in a wrecking defeat.

The reason why these creatures decided to attack the Olympian gods was due to their ambition of being more than human beings. The Olympian Gods concluded that these bold creatures needed to learn a lesson for attacking the mighty gods and they taught them a lesson by cutting them in half and turning their heads around so that they could see the wound where they cut them. It is said that ever since that devastating defeat, these human beings try to find the other half of the other person, they have a strong desire to unite, and that desire is love.
